Teaching culture at school provides students with insight into people, geography and history. It establishes areas of interest that students can develop through the study of language, travel and friendships. As the world economy has globalized an appreciation of other cultures has become indispensable in almost every field of work. The study of foreign culture is often the most memorable part of a course and a knowledge of Japanese culture often fosters a desire to learn the language which students often choose to follow up at a later date. As a teacher of Japanese at schools I have found that early introduction of Japanese culture to students establishes foundations which influence later subject and career choices. Values are so important to relationships and communication that a person often benefits as much from having an interest in Japanese culture as they do from knowing the language.
